I decided that I'd start writing reviews for the books that I read. so, here goes!
Chosen Prey By Cheyenne McCray obtained from bookshare Rating: 4 and a half out of 5
Lyra Collins has made a life for herself in a sleepy artists' community in Arizona. Having escaped from a cult five years ago, she keeps a low profile, making a living as an artist. But when a mysterious man with a dark, dangerous look appears on her doorstep, she knows it's time to run again. Former cop Dare Lancaster didn't mean to lead a bunch of fanatical cult members straight to Lyra's door. But now that he's gotten her into this mess, he's determined to get her out. The frantic heat their bodies generate whenever they're together makes him want to save her... Neal Barker's grandfather was the first Prophet Jericho, and Neal now rules the Temple of Light commune unchecked. According to his visions, he and Lyra are destined to produce the new Messiah, so he will stop at nothing to make her his own. But soon Dare will discover just how far he'll go to protect Lyra-and never let her go.
I am really struggling to figure out how to rate this book. Part of me says that I ought to just give it a five out of five and be done with it but I'm saving those scores for something that will truly rock my world. Nevertheless, this book was a fantastic journey in to the lives of a frightened woman who has been on the run from a bunch of religious fanatics, a cop ridden with guilt over the death of his partner, and a cult leader that I can't help but dub as "one crazy bastard".
I was fascinated with the mental processes of the cult leader and his men and I thought that the author really did a good job in delving in to their personalities. She did a wonderful job of explaining just how people became indoctrinated in to the cult and how a rational person can suddenly give up all of their worldly possessions and start believing prophecies from a charismatic individual. Lyra is a strong-willed and fiery woman whose emotions are all over the map. Dare Lancaster is a determined man who will do anything to keep her safe.
This book is definitely in the erotic fiction category, and to that end, I must say that the scenes were not only steamy but very well-written and emotionally charged. The author really knows how to build up the tension and keep that sexual undercurrent going through the whole of the book.
There was also a great deal of action and the book never seemed to slow down. And if there's anything I love about a good book it's sex and guns...not necessarily in that order. There was a healthy mixture of eroticism, violence, and romance, and I am dying to read more of Cheyenne's writing.
I did feel that the dialogue was a little rushed at times and there are events that I would have liked to see drawn out more, but really, this was a wonderful read. And while it didn't grip me as much as Christine Feehan or Sherrilyn Kenyon's writings can, it was very much worth the read. I couldn't put it down.
Sounds good, I'll give it a try.
